modellbauberts first Lightsaber Video effects
Wir schreiben das Jahr 2001.
Mein Freund Carlos beschäftigte sich zu dieser Zeit intensiv mit 3D StudioMax und lernte schnell interessante Dinge mit der Software anzustellen.
Schnell kamen wir auf die Idee mal zu versuchen Laserschwert-Klingen in Fotos einzubauen.
Als dies auf einem ersten Foto gelang, wurde damit eine kleine Lawine losgetreten. So drehte ich meinen ersten Laserschwert-Griff aus einem Stück Rundstahl. Irre schwer und eher ein Knüppel als
ein eleganter Griff aber egal!
Ich ließ das Teil in der Galvanik meines Ausbildungsbetriebes verzinken, was damals wirklich gut aussah. Leider oxidiert Zink sehr schnell und es wird grau und matt xD
Der Griff bekam noch eine tiefe, 20mm große Bohrung, sodass man Holzstiele als Klingen hineinstecken konnte.
Die Stiele wurden neonfarben bemalt, um sie besser auf den Fotos und vor allem auf den Videos erkennen zu können.
Den Effekt in ein Foto einzubauen war mir Carlos' Technik sehr einfach und schnell gemacht. Ein Video zu bearbeiten kostete jedoch unheimlich viel Zeit.
Wir kannten damals noch kein automatisches Tracking. Also splitteten wir unsere nur wenige Sekunden dauernden Filmchen in Einzelframes auf und Carlos zeigte mir, wie ich den Effekt ins Video
bekommen könnte.
So modellierte ich eine Klinge, welche sich genau wie im Film stetig veränderte. Dieses 3D-Modell legte ich dann über unseren Film. Dabei musste ich es für jedes einzelne der zahlreichen
Einzelbilder exakt über dem Holzstiel platzieren.
Das war eine recht zeitaufwändige Arbeit. Immerhin hatte ich 24 Einzelbilder pro Sekunde Film zu bearbeiten. Aber Fleißarbeit hat mich noch nie abgeschreckt.
Über das Ergebnis freuten wir uns damals riesig. Auch mein Ausbilder war sehr beeindruckt davon. Er zeigte es auch einigen anderen Leuten, die darauf mehr oder weniger begeistert oder verstört
reagierten xD
Wir planten einen Kurzfilm zu drehen, zu welchem es aber leider nie kam.
Mein Freund Steven und ich bauten einige Tage lang an einer Bikerscout-Rüstung, die aber nie fertig wurde. Es gab damals noch keine Rüstungen zu kaufen. Also nutzten wir PVC-Platten, welche wir
mit dem Heißluftföhn formten.
Den Helm jedoch konnten wir aufgrund der Komplexheit nie bauen.
So verlief das Filmprojekt irgendwann im Sand. Wir hatten ja noch zahlreiche andere spannende Projekte vor uns :-)

It is the year 2001.
At that time my friend Carlos was working intensively on 3D StudioMax and quickly learned to do interesting things with the software.
We quickly came up with the idea of trying to edit lightsaber blades into our photos.
When this succeeded in a first photo, it started a small avalanche. So I turned my first lightsaber hilt from a piece of round steel. Crazy heavy and more like a club than an elegant handle but
that didn't matter!
I had the part galvanized in the electroplating department of my company, which looked really good at the time. Unfortunately, zinc oxidizes very quickly and it becomes gray and matt xD
The hilt got a deep, 20mm large hole, so that wooden rods could be inserted as blades.
The rods were painted in neon colors so that they could be better seen on the photos and especially on the videos.
To edit the effect into a photo was very easy and quick for me with Carlos' technique. Editing a video took a lot more time.
We didn't know automatic tracking at the time. So we split up our films, which only lasted a few seconds, into single frames and Carlos showed me how I could get the effect into the video.
So I modeled a blade that flickered just like in the movie. I then placed this 3D model over our film. I had to place it exactly above the wooden rod for each of the numerous individual
pictures.
It was a very time-consuming job. After all, I had to process 24 frames per second of film. But hard work has never deterred me.
We were very happy about the result. My instructor was also very impressed by it. He also showed it to some other people who were more or less excited or perturbed by it xD
We planned to make a short film, which unfortunately never happened.
My friend Steven and I built a biker scout armor for a few days, but we never finished it. At that time there was no armor to buy. So we used PVC sheets, which we shaped with the hot air
gun.
However, due to the complexity, we could never build the helmet.
So the film project ended up in the sand. We had many other exciting projects ahead of us :-)
