our selfmade Proton Packs
Die Protonenpacks sind eine Gemeinschaftsarbeit
von modellbaubert, shinzo, Donnie und ape.
Die Idee kam 2010 auf dem Rückweg der Connichi auf, als shinzo fragte, ob man nicht mal die Ghostbusters cosplayen sollte. Lautes Zustimmungs-Getöse erfüllte das Auto und so nahm das Ganze seinen Lauf.. ;)
Für das Gehäuse hat modellbaubert kurze Zeit später eine 3D Vorlage erstellt,
nach welcher wir eine Urform aus Holz gebaut haben.
Dabei hielten wir uns an "Stefans Pläne" von gbfans.com
Diese Urform hat schonmal 3-4 Wochen in Anspruch genommen,
bis alles richtig aussah und verspachtelt wurde.
Our Proton Packs are created in collaboration by modellbaubert, shinzo, donnie and ape.
The idea came up in 2010 on our home way from Connichi. shinzo asked if we should cosplay the Ghostbusters. Loud approving cheers
filled the car and so it commenced.. ;)
modellbaubert created a 3D template for the case shortly afterwards with which we've built a prototype of wood.
In doing so, we followed "Stefans plans" from gbfans.com
This original form has taken already 3-4 weeks, until everything looked right and was filled.
Anschließend haben wir unsere Urform in tagelanger Arbeit mit Silikon abgeformt. Hierbei mussten wir immer wieder warten, bis eine Schicht trocken war, um die nächste drauf zu streichen.
Da dies unsere erste Abform-Arbeit mit Silikon war, und wir nicht wussten woher wir es beziehen sollten, besorgte uns unser Freund Jörg 10kg von dem Zeug über seine Firma. Nun konnten wir sichergehen, dass wir auch hochwertige Materialien hatten.
Insgesamt haben wir 5 Schichten aufgetragen (ihr wollt nicht wissen, wie teuer allein das Silikon hierfür war.. x.x').
Afterwards we molded our original mold into silicone for days. We had to
wait until one layer was dry to paint the next on it.
Since this was our first mold-making-job with silicone and we didn't know where to get it from, our friend Jörg got us 10kg of the stuff from his company. Now we could be sure that we also had high quality materials.
All in all, we applied 5 layers (you don't want to know how much we had to spend only for that silicone.. x.x ').
-> Da wir bis dahin keine Ahnung von dieser Arbeit (Formenbau und Abformungen) hatten, gab es bis zu diesem Schritt leider auch Rückschläge.
Unsere erste Idee war es gewesen, die Urform mit Zement abzuformen.
Hat leider nicht funktioniert.. ;)
Die zweite Idee war gewesen, eine mehrteilige, starre Form aus GFK zu bauen. Leider mussten wir unsere Urform dann mit einer Flex frei schneiden, da es doch
Hinterschneidungen gab, die wir nicht bemerkt hatten. Das zerstörte unsere Urform auch zum Teil und wir mussten sie reparieren.. :(
Den entgültigen Schritt mit Silikon haben wir unserem sehr guten Freund Jörg zu verdanken, der uns mit Rat und Tat zur Seite stand. :)
-> Because we hadn't any idea about this working process (mold making and impressions) there were also
setbacks until this step.
Our first idea was to mold the original mold with cement.
Unfortunately it didn't work.. ;)
The second idea was to build a multi-part, rigid form made of GRP. Unfortunately we had to cut our original form with a flex, because we had
undercuts which we hadn't noticed. This partially destroyed our archetype and we had to fix it.. :(

4th of July 2011 - our Proton Pack silicone mold
In diese Silikonform haben wir mit Epoxidharz und Glasgewebematten die Gehäuse für die Packs laminiert.
Am Anfang mussten wir uns erstmal einarbeiten. Für das Laminieren eines Protonenpackgehäuses haben wir mit 4 Leuten zum Schluss ca. 5 Stunden benötigt.
We've laminated the shell for the packs with epoxy resin and glass cloth
mats in this silicone mold.
At the beginning we had to get incorporate.
Later we needed 4 people and about 5 hours for the lamination of one proton pack
shell.
Bis wir das erste Pack aus der Form holen konnten (mit Recherche und Rückschlägen) hat es ca. 10 Monate intensivste Arbeit gekostet.
Und das war erst der Anfang - denn jetzt hatten wir nur das nackte Gehäuse..
und vor Freude strahlende Gesichter! ;D
Until we could get the first pack out of shape (with research and setbacks) it took about 10
months of intensive work.
And this was just the beginning - because now we only had the bare shell..
and very happy faces! ;D
Parallel zur Entstehung der Gehäuse arbeiteten wir auch an anderen Teilen, die das Gesamtbild formen werden. Damit es so "echt" wie nur möglich ist, wurden viele Teile aus Metall angefertigt.
Die Schutzbügel sowie die Rückenplatten wurden von Donnie und modellbaubert ausgeflext und geschweißt.
Die Strahlergehäuse hat modellbaubert zuerst ausgeflext, gebogen und dann zusammen geschweißt.
Parallel to the development of the Proton Pack shells we also worked on other parts that will shape the total
picture. To make it as "real" as possible, many parts were made of metal.
The guard and back plates were fluted and welded by Donnie and modellbaubert.
The Proton Pack Wands has first been
modeled, bent and then welded together.
Die original ALICE-LC1 Tragegestelle von der US Army haben wir nach Fehlkäufen dann auch noch zusammen bekommen.
Erster Test der bisher fertig gestellten Kleinteile, die später lackiert an das fertige Protonenpack kommen werden.
After mispurchases we finally get the original ALICE-LC1 racks from the US Army.
First test of the previously completed small parts, which we still had to paint before attaching them at our Proton Packs.
Die Strahler nahmen auch langsam Form an und bekamen nach und nach weitere Anbauteile sowie ihre Elektronik, welche modellbaubert entworfen und gelötet hat.
The Proton Pack Wands also slowly took shape and gradually got more attachments and their electronics, which modellbaubert has designed and soldered.
Viele Kleinteile wurden immer gleich im 4er Pack für alle Protonenpacks aus diversen Materialien von uns angefertigt.
Als alles fertig war, wurden die Gehäuse und alle Teile schwarz lackiert.
Many small parts of various materials we've always made in the same 4-pack for
all Proton Packs.
Finally we varnished the shells and all parts with black color.
Nach und nach sahen sie schon langsam wie fertige Protonenpacks aus.
Die letzten Tage der Zusammenstellung hatten wir Hilfe von unserem sehr guten Freund Sascha, der uns tatkräftig unterstützte, damit wir zur AnimagiC 2012 nicht ohne Protonenpacks beim Kostümwettbewerb erscheinen mussten.

The last days of our compilation we had much help from our very good friend Sascha, who supported us actively, so we hadn't to appear at the AnimagiC 2012
without proton packs at the costume contest.
Wir haben viel Wert darauf gelegt, Originalteile wie sie im Film verwendet wurden zu verbauen. Ihr glaubt nicht, wie lange wir nach manchen Teilen suchen mussten..
An unseren Protonenpacks hängen irgendwelche Maschinenteile aus den 80ern, welche aus den verschiedensten Ländern importiert wurden. Vor allem aus den U.S.A., England und sogar Australien!
Erklärt mal beim Zoll, was ihr damit vor habt.. da hatten wir auch so manche Diskussion.. ;D
Die Aufkleber sind exakte Kopien von denen, die im Film zu sehen sind.
shinzo hat vorhandene Vorlagen teils umgebaut und auf diversen Materialien drucken lassen.

You don't believe how long we had to search for some parts..
At our Proton Packs we've got some machine parts from the 80s which we've imported from different countries.
Especially from the USA, England and even Australia!
We had so many discussions with the customs about these parts.. it was difficult to explain them.. ;D
The stickers are exact copies of those seen in the movie.
shinzo partly rebuilt existing templates and printed them on various materials.

Die Protonenpacks von modellbaubert und shinzo wurden im Laufe der Jahre immer weiter aufgerüstet.
So haben sie inzwischen zum Beispiel optionale Lichtschläuche, die man als Protonenstrahlen an das Strahlergehäuse anstöpseln kann.
Der Effekt vor Ort und auf Fotos schaut wirklich genial aus! :D

The Proton Packs from modellbaubert and shinzo have been continually upgraded over the years.
For example, they now have optional light tubes which can be plugged onto the spotlight housing as Proton Beams.
The effect locally and on photos looks really awesome! :D

Am 18. Dezember 2014 erschien unser mehrseitiger Bericht über unseren Protonenpack-Bau in der cohaku #05.
Dabei handelt es sich um ein Cosplay Magazin, welches allerhand wertvolle Tipps in allen Bereichen dieses schönen Hobbies (von Frisuren über Make-up bis Rüstungen und Propbau) als gesammelte Werke präsentiert.

Elektronische Funktionen:

leuchten im Rhythmus wie im Film auf.
modellbauberts und shinzos Protonenpacks haben Hochfahr- und Schießsound und können eine Reihe von Songs abspielen.
Das Protonenpack von shinzo hat einen Anschluss für mp3-Player.
Die Lautstärke ist bei beiden Packs regelbar.
Der Lautsprecher befindet sich direkt hinter unserem Kopf - deshalb tragen wir Ohrenstöpsel und können euch nicht hören während die Musik läuft. ;)
Das Projekt läuft seit 2010 und hat sehr viel Zeit in Anspruch genommen
und wir basteln, erweitern und verbessern immernoch.. ;)

movie.
modellbauberts and shinzo's proton packs have start-up and shooting sounds and they can play a number of songs.
shinzos Proton Pack has a port for mp3 players.
The volume is adjustable in both packs.
The speaker is right behind our heads - that's why we wear earplugs and can not hear you while the music is playing. ;)
This project has been running since 2010 and has taken a lot of time and we are still working, expanding and improving.. ;)
